I thought about a Bluetooth speaker and did a mock up on a flat car that I tried at our club layout. It worked, but it seemed to get a little interference as static at some points on the layout. On our 24' x 24' L shaped layout, there were only a few places where the BT effectively covered the layout.

I can see some application for a BT speaker in a static spot on the layout, but didn't want to chance it for rolling stock to work reliably. Plus, I'd rather use my phone or tablet for train control.

Sounds like your son will be able to get your sound up and running!
