 "As for spline, it's an engineering term used for straight bits that pivot at their connecting location, which describe the rail cars, even if it's not the term the railroads use.  Perhaps articulated is the correct railroad term as noted above."

 

 There are spine cars which are cars without the wide body, just the center frame spine and a couple of wheel ramps at one end. There are various types of well cars both single stand alone and articulated with different configurations of units.  A good book for an overview of early era to late 1990's era intermodal equipment is " The model railroader's guide to intermodal equipment and operations" by Jeff Wilson.......DaveB
