Bunches. $1000 will get you a lot of loco from Lionel, even a new one, but I would definitely go second-hand. I do. "Second-hand" can mean used or all the way up to NIB. Nothing wrong with used.

1K can also get you 2 great $500 locos.

Which one(s)? I don't know what you like.
