Train Tender gets 15 cents each for jewels when you buy them in lots of 24 (one color). Choice of red, yellow, or green.
Ok good to know! Thank you...
I've never seen an original postwar engine with red jewels. Red were used on various prewar steamers such as the one posted previously in this thread.
You can tell the difference between original green jewels and any of the green jewels available from parts dealers. The new ones are a deeper green.
The red are a little closer in appearance, but still not quite the same.
I would compare the red jewels in your Hudson to known originals in a prewar engine such as an 0-6-0 switcher. You have to put them side-by-side. Photos won't be conclusive.

The original green marker jewels look like the glass used in Sprite bottles - the repros have a slight bluish tint that's obvious when you compare Lionel Corp jewels to current jewels.
You should know too that not all the green jewels are the same size either. In fact, original lionel jewels were smaller than repro jewels. A few of the old Lionel jewels are available occassionally.

My dad's original 763-e (bought new by his dad), has the red and green.
His 1950 773 has both green.
for what it's worth.
Not to change the topic but how is the best way to re-attach jewels ? Someone once suggested white Elmer's glue, is there a better option ?

I've used super glue with great results.
I have been watching the 773 loco's for several years. 1950 in nice condition is still at $1000.00. Sometimes can be had at 750-800.00. The 1964 model is the least desirable.
