I've been collecting Standard Gauge trains for a bit now and I recently had my eye on a Standard Gauge 400E in black, MTH# 11-1028-0.  I was all set to place an order with a hobby shop and then I noticed something at the last minute that made me hold off my purchase.

 

The locomotive is listed as Black with Brass and, as I ran down the list of bulleted notes on the loco., I noticed that one of the bulleted notes stated that it has nickel trim.  Now apart from that, I was also going to order a full set of green State cars to go with the locomotive and the cars are listed as having nickel trim.

 

My question is -  Why would the locomotive be listed as Black with Brass having nickel trim?  I do understand the black part, since the locomotive is painted black...but nickel trim?  I don't understand where the trim is coming into play.  I did call MTH today about this and spoke to someone who did say that the Brass part of the locomotive is the plates on the tender, the bell, logo on the cab, etc., and the nickel parts are the wheels, drive rods, etc. 

 

Does anyone know if this is true?  I would like to have the engine and state cars to have matching trim and I was really confused in what I was looking at.

 

Any info that anyone could provide would be fantastic!!

The description "nickel trim" in the bulleted notes for the 11-1028 is a misprint (not uncommon for MTH).  That engine is brass trim.

 

The wheels and drive rods are always nickel, regardless of trim.  The trim items are headlight, bell, smokestack, sand dome, piping, plates, etc.

 

 Nickel trim:

Brass trim:

 

11-1028-0

 

 

 You may have a hard time finding a 400E in black with nickel trim.  Most black and crackle black have brass trim.  The nickel trim model above is in gray enamel.

 

As far as I know, the green State Cars are trimmed in brass, like the black 400E.  The "nickel trim" in the bulleted list for the green state cars is also a misprint. MTH just copies and pastes that list for everything, I think.  

 

If you go with the brass trim you should be okay for both the 400E and the cars, but if you have someone you talked to at MTH, you might check on that.

Hojack - Looking at each model side by side like that, I can now tell there's a major difference between Brass trim and Nickel trim.  I think my confusion stemmed from my conversation with MTH that only a few of the trim pieces were either Nickel or Brass, in this comparison, it's all of the trim pieces.  Going forward I'll remember the misprint you mentioned and rely more on what I see on the locomotive and not what's printed.
