6-28974 locomotive

Exactly what kind of information are you looking for?

is the tender die cast. is it one of the last made in america. overall is it a good engine. Any opinion is welcome

This is Lionel's postwar-derived #739 Nickel Plate Berkshire and was the final product that came out of Lionel's Chesterfield factory in 2001.  It came with a letter of certification signed by then-Lionel President Dick Maddox.

And yes, the tender is die-cast, based off of the postwar 2426w tender.

at least that is what it says on the sealed box

as soon as I get a few more shelves up I will open the box and know for sure

it will be a big deal because when I break the sealed plastic all the Michigan air will escape

I will have friends and family present to share the experience

No, it is not harsh. No, I didn't look it up.

Yes it is! So, is it too much to ask for people not to use only a number (as you did) in referring to the item in question? Better to use an item Name and/or picture to let people know right off the bat what you are asking about, instead of making the askees to look up an obscure number first.

If you need some fresh clean Michigan air to replace the one you'll be losing I can help by sending you some. I don't live far from chesterfield and can get a real nice sample for you to put back into the box when you want to reseal it.

Engine in question is bottom right, of course.  

For a while we had complaints (justified) that members would ask advice and so forth on a loco or car without giving the item number, even if known. "My Lionel Pacific..." was too imprecise. That issue got pretty well resolved.

This is not the first time I have spotted a "number only" post. Now, sometimes the number is actually not known and the poster is fairly new at this and that's fine...but would putting both pieces of data in the title or at least the post too much to ask? Kinda helpful...I didn't know what a "6-28974" was, and I almost skipped the whole thing.

'Course, I actually have zero information on this loco, anyway...

I recently purchased one of these Berkshires and was pleasantly surprised how nice it was. The TMCC system works great and I had no problems. These engines came with a certificate that states it was one of the last production engines made in the United States.

If I recall correctly it also has the distinction of having open-spoke Baldwin Disc driver wheelsets; previously those Baldwin wheels all the way back to Lionel's prewar days were a solid casting.
