Looking at your slide-Switch. It's looks like they using it as single pole switch.

I don't see any solder on one side of the terminal. I may be wrong here.

Not my switch, it's the Lionel replacement parts photo. It could be Mike's clue that only two wires are connected as you do.

Figure out how to remove the shell. get some close up photos of the board and the bottom of the switch. Edit your post title and add the words" won't move forward". GRJ, GGG or some others that work on these will respond.

There are a few reasons for this and they could suggest how to diagnose it rather than throw parts at it or guess.

If you find a loose wire that would be a bonus. Perhaps a loose connector.

The sound is a separate problem. get it moving first.

Update still having problems. It still goes into reverse on its own and will only cycle from r-n-r. but after running it like the it will eventually go back to normal on its own. Another thing I noticed with the transformer  throttle @ 0. The loco wants to try and creep along. Could it be just a board issue on the loco
