Re: 6mm static grass

Thanks to all who have been offering advice on various scenery areas on my layout. It is coming along pretty well in spite of my complete lack of artistic ability. Today's problem is locating a source of long static grass for a hillside. I have been using the standard 1.5 to2mm grass with some success, but I have a long, somewhat steep, hillside which I want to scenic as long wild growth.

I had a local shop try to order the 6mm for me. The response he got was "out of stock, No projected availability". I have scoured the net, and found a variety, I believe by Notch or soflor (is that spelled right?. Problem is when I find a color I like,( actually found one called grassy hillside), The contact info for the supplier is always e-mail. I would really like to find a dealer who will talk to me on the phone so I can be confidant I know what I am getting. I did find one in the UK, but I am guessing the euro dollars would be more in US dollars than I expect to pay, not to mention the overseas phone bill,shipping cost, and probable long wait for arrival.

Bottom line is I need the name and phone number for a domestic dealer who stocks 6mm grass and will accept phone calls. Any ideas?

Scenic Express has static grass. Tons of it, different heights, colors etc.

Not quite the same, but...

I read a couple articles years ago when the static grass application first hit the scene (pun intended) that you can extend the height of the 'blades' by a second application. I tried it...twice (see below)...and it works!

i.e., let the first application dry thoroughly, spray (fine mist) the field with the thinned adhesive, as with the first application, insert your ground connection, turn on the shaker, shake away.

You'll want to be assured that you've got a good technique going where the blades are standing up. If you're too far away from the field...or you forgot to turn on the shaker before shaking()...you'll have a bunch of 'freshly mown' grass lying on top. (Not fun! What a mess!)

I suppose it depends on how urgent the need for a longer (6mm) height is.

the 6mm static grass is what I use for most rural scenery and get it from scenic express as mentioned above.

Hillsides can be a bit tricky, use a applicator with a small opening if hilll is steep, other wise the grass will end up at an angle off the hill. I put a piece of cardboard in mine when doing hillside. Also look at using silfor 6 mm tufts mixed in with the static grass. One other thing , when done go over the area with static grass gun with no grass. This will stand up more of fibers. Goes pretty quickly, this was done in about hr.. This was applied to a wet fusionfiber base, no glue required, its in the fusionfiber.
