The new viewing platform for the constellation public art project at Bannerman's Island, south of Beacon, NY proved to be a great place to watch trains.  I was over by 6 this morning, to find a mist-covered river, but lots of train activity.

You can read about the project here.

Here's a southbound from the platform, a Northbound, and a close-up view of Bannerman's Castle.

The bridge, to the inbound side of the weekend-only Breakneck Ridge Metro-North stop, also provides good photo opportunities.

You can get up close and personal from the bridge, too. If you go, consider taking a weekend train to the Breakneck Ridge Station. There is very little parking, only a few pull-outs along 9D. Plus, you have to walk a distance along the highway. This sign on the platform explains the project.

Peter, it might be. I know there was a devastating fire there at some point. It was once a storage place for old weapons, from the Civil War and onward. My step-son (who teaches at West Point and kayaked there before it was legal) says the business was once in New York, but the city made them move out for safety.  My son also says it fell into disrepair early because when built they used river water for the cement, and the salinity made it deteriorate faster. I found a nice history here.

Very unique  place that always interested me when seen from the train. I'll probably take one of the trips as well on another visit. No time this trip, home tomorrow.
