I have been wondering for a long time on what to do when it comes to realistic signaling, mainly with the crossing gates and signals.

Since I work as a chemical tanker truck driver I drive into alot of chemical plants on a daily basis, and run into alot of train crossings and tank cars. Has there ever been a realistic crossing gate and signal made that worked just like the ones on the real railroad, where the gates come down slowly and close-to-prototypical flashing lights? I have the older Lionel crossing gate and signal (that used the dreaded pressure plate) that when a train came by the gate goes down fast and the lights stay on the whole time, no flashing. Not very great for realism, and was the reason I haven't used it very much. I also have MTH's version in which the lights do flash but at a faster rate.

It would be nice to find some crossing signals that worked more like the real ones do, and that would include the lights on the gate itself. Many real life crossings also have the overhead lighting too, and I don't know if I have ever seen those either for O-gauge.

A big layout is awesome to see, but haven't seen many with more prototypical-based signaling, especially when crossing multiple tracks.

I have a couple of the MTH crossing gates, they are not bad. Main drawback is no sound, but they have crossing signals with sound so you can cobble something together that way. There are also other places that have just the crossing sound boards you can add.

Custom Signals used the Atlas signal system which I believe is still available from Atlas-O (still listed on their website anyway), but may be in short supply right now or so I have heard? That is a very nice system and what I am hoping to use someday. Custom Signals worked with Atlas on the design of the system.

You might also try Z-Stuff for Trains, or NJ International I am not very familiar with their products other than having a Z-Stuff switch machine on my layout which is a very nice switch machine.

The most realistic looking crossing gates are made by NJ International, but they are not "plug and play".  You have to rig up an activator under the layout to operate them.  They make the WRRS free-standing automatic gate, as well as the Griswold gate with flasher and crossbuck (which were heavily used by SP and UP, as well as the GN).

You can get two styles in black and white or red and white, and they will operate through a full 90 degree sweep, which is the most common prototype, although some prototype gates use a shorter sweep, in order to clear overhead wires when raised.

Thanks for the nice video. The warning bell is a nice feature but gets annoying after a while. I put mine on a timer to shut off after 10 seconds. More about keeping peace in the family than being prototypical.
