... The layout at York however was pretty tacky.  A few tablecloths spread on folding tables.... MTH, Atlas, and Bachmann all had layouts with scenery.  The "April public" surely needs more than a few loops on tablecloths!

Very true... But the diorama featuring the truss bridge with piers looked quite nice.

As i mentioned in another thread, I'm not certain who or what was THE driving force behind York being opened to the general public.  But if the importers had anything to do with it, then they got their wish... and now they'll need to follow through with some eye-catching display layouts -- like those from about 8-10 years ago.  Unfortunately, not to many of us have photos of those layouts, because we couldn't take pictures of them back in those days.    The MTH layout, in particular, was a show-stopper...  keeping crowds (often 2 or 3 deep) amazed with trains running through great scenery.

Mike, thanks for the photos of the F40PH's.  As I have one on order, I was disappointed they were not there to view. (But I was glad to see the Batman set running and one of your folks demonstrating the sounds for me)

My other surprise (disappointment) was that none of the new passenger cars were on display, either this year's or next years with the new, lowered bolster design.  As I am in the part of the world with no hobby shops, my York trip was when I was hoping to see the new cars live.  They must be really popular, as I didn't see them even at the major dealer's displays either.

But, it was great to see the new GG1 demonstrated.  I had not even considered purchasing one, but am now tempted.  My wife, who thinks all GG1's are dumb, even she was interested!  A little.

York is a public event April '17??? If so details??? thx

York in April will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday.  This is only in the dealer halls.  If they want to be able to go into the member halls they will still have to join the TCA.  The dealer halls will be open until 4pm on Saturday to make it worth while to the public to come.  The member halls will close at 2 still.

According to the "PRESIDENT'S COLUMN" in the TCA's October 2016 "The Train Collectors Quarterly" magazine, "the dealer halls only  will be open to non-members on Saturday only".
