The A&R is still a going railroad.  The shops are easily photographed from the road.

The 2-8-2 #40 on the Connecticut Valley came from the A&R.  I crawled over and under it in a VERY dark shed many years ago.  Couldn't see any color till the slides came back.  Another side door caboose is on the New Hope Valley at Bonsal, NC.  It is in its original Seaboard markings I believe

I discovered the A&R this spring when my wife and I were in Southern Pines for a carriage competition and I did my usual wandering.  Aberdeen is a delightful old town and the A&R tracks are right in the old downtown.  The depot was closed, so I did not see the museum but the equipment on display was in great condition.

We took Amtrak to Southern Pines where their Southern station is right in the middle of downtown, with a street on either side of the tracks.
