I acquired a Lionel Reading T-1 6-18006 that has been upgraded with Train America command control and RS.  I would like to add a fan driven smoke unit or make the the old puffer unit work better.  Also add a remote coupler on the tender.  What is your suggestion and parts needed.

Thanks

Funny you should ask.

I have a pair of reading T1 locomotives that have the DC motor from Timko and an MTH fan driven smoke unit.  They're waiting for me to finish the upgrade, I'll be using the ERR Cruise Commander and RailSounds Commander in these.  For great smoke, I'd suggest the MTH smoke unit with (of course), my Super-Chuffer to enhance the smoke and add some nice lighting effects as well.

For the electrocoupler on the tender, do you have a tether with enough wires to support adding it?  The TAS setup supports the EC, you just need to get the wires to the actual coupler.

Well I asked at the right time then.  Well I was thinking about the Super-Chuffer too.   What kind of lighting effects would it do for a steamer like this?  Would it be able to give an ash pan glow?  If so would it glow brighter at higher speeds?

Which MTH smoke unit are you using?  I am using DCS would I be able to control smoke out put with my hand held controller?

On the Electrocoupler, all the boards are in the tender so it should just plug in then, with out going through the tether.  Which electrocoupler is right length for this application?  By the way it has the 8 pin tether.  The video in the original post is of the wiring in the Locomotive and the pictures of the boards in the tender.  Sorry I did not note that before.  Can you tell which version of RS this is on the TAS board?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, the Super-Chuffer adds Rule-17 lighting and cab light control.  Rule-17 dims the lights when the locomotive is stationary, and the cab light control turns off the cab lights in motion, turns them on when you stop.

I haven't done ashpan glow, I've thought about cobbling up something that connects across the motor to drive some flickering LED's, they'd get brighter as the speed increases.  Of course, the locomotive has to have the gap for the ashpan glow to work well, the Reading T1 doesn't have it, at least mine don't.

John,

Thanks I understand now about the light control.  I have an old Proto 1 smoke unit would that work with the Super-chuffer? Do i need to modify anything on the smoke unit circuit board?

Also how would I figure out which electrocoupler to use? I am sure their is simpler way to go about figuring this out but I went to Lionel website and searched in parts "coil coupler". http://goo.gl/TxiuM6  I found a long list when you click on a picture then it shows a very nice key to know which one is right for the end that attaches to the truck.   I know the length of the coupler is 2 inches. But what kind of "MNT" is the right one for where it attaches to the truck?  When I look at the picture of MNT B or C it's thickness does not look to be thick enough. I don't what to get the coil height all wrong.

The PS/1 smoke unit works fine for a TMCC upgrade, I've used a number of them just as they are.  Look at the graphic below and compare it to your coupler.  The top of the actual coupler is level with the mount on the B coupler.  Most of the electrocouplers I use are the B mount.  I have a Reading T1 here, and mine appears to use the B mount.
