I think that would make a dandy locomotive.  There is probably enough room you could do it without any modifications to the shell, in case you ever find an original motor for it.  Make sure you set the motor up so the key comes out underneath the running board, and use a wire running back to the cab to operate the brake so you don't have to cut a slot in the boiler for the lever.

It would certainly be better looking that the awful FlyMarNel I built on a dare using an AF 303 shell, Marx motor and Lionel truck:

Sorry you guys had to see that...

I keep thinking that siderods and a two wheel pilot truck would go a long ways to helping it's appearance... maybe someday I'll get around to doing it.  You are right, the Marx windup motor has enough grunt to move the trains.  It should... it was a tight fit, took a fair amount of grinding and trimming in the shell to make it fit over the motor.  Sort of like cramming a car engine in a riding lawnmower, I suppose...

James, thanks for the tips & encouragement. Your FlyMarNel was what I thought of when I saw the shell.

Greg, thanks for identifying it for me.

Dave/Steamer, Thanks.

Southwest, I tried several combinations - most sounded like they were insurance companies..

Flarx, sounded like something Scotty would  say to Captain Kirk ~ "Captain, the Flarx will implode if we keep this up!"  So that's why I chose it.
