The T's younger, but much bigger brother, an MTH P motor, insisted on getting into the picture for a size comparison.

It's older, but shorter brother, an S motor, also had to get in on the act.

Unfortunately, the first run of the T will have to wait a while since the layout is out of action for a few days due to a furnace replacement project in the basement.

The main task of the big electrics was to replace the steam engines at Harmon, NY, and bring the trains into and out of Grand Central where steam was not allowed.

 

The T motor and later the P motor replaced the S for this job, with the S then being relegated to switching service and shuttling passenger trains between Grand Central and the Mott Haven coach yard in the south Bronx.

 

The P motors actually were first used in Cleveland Union Terminal service, and brought over to the New York City area when more power was needed for heavier trains.

Also: sure wish that Lionel would do the remaining S-motor, the S-3. I have the S-1 and S-2, and they are very nice. The S-3 had a longer frame, but the body tooling and

most of the running gear from the S-2 could be used. 

 

I'd buy it.

Thanks for sharing!  That T Motor looks fantastic!  I love the look and lines of NYC's electrics.  All we need now is for someone to model Harmon with the change of engines from electrics to steam or Diesel. 

 

As an aside to this topic.....

 

Many more electrics need to be offered by the manufacturers.  

 

NYC...R class (freight)    and I would love to see a Tri Power Motor (DES) offered. NYC had about 40  of those. Didn't Lackawanna have similar engine?

 

Milw....Those Baldwin electrics would be nice.

 

New Haven.....many, many electrics of that railroad have yet to be offered.

 

Virginian.....A set of side- rodders would be great.

Oh wow! I was expecting such pictures of the S model in black from 3Rd Rail, finaly I got them from you and Now I know that I must have this engine. 

 

The MTH P2 look cheap beside the T, the S2 remain a nicely made engine.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful engines produced in the last 43 years. When I was a teenager living in Manhattan, I would watch them bringing  the passenger trains into GCT where the tunnel starts on Park Ave at 98th St. If you are a NYC fan you need to get one these for your layout. Thankyou Sunset 3rd Rail.

Finally got a chance Friday to open my new 3rd Rail T-3 that came last Monday.

 

It's beautiful and actually ran with no "problems" (see #5), so far:

1 - the brass castings are not up to Lionel/MTH standards of brass add-ons

 

2 - it runs very well; ERR Cruise is superb; sound is good

 

3 - whoever said above that the MTH P-2 looks "cheap beside the T" is wildly incorrect;

     I have both (black) sitting next to each other and the MTH piece is also beautiful

     (see #1)

 

4 - surprisingly nothing was broken out of the box; the piece feels more substantial

     that many 3rd Rail pieces that I own and/or have handled

 

5 - there is a F/R/electronic orientation error on my loco, and I suspect on 

     all of them, judging by the photo on the front of the instruction booklet.

     (It is a photo of the rear, prototypically.)

     

     The "Front" of the loco as defined by initial start-up and Aux +0 and "F" coupler

     and clear/red class/marker lights is incorrect; the "Front" is the end with the big

     white "F" on the body, but this loco thinks that the #2 end with the steam                 generator/Run/Prog switch cover is the Front. It is not. When my "F/R"

     couplers fire, the wrong coupler(s) open, as defined by the actual locomotive. 

     The end with "2" on it is the Rear, and should have the red markers, and other

     features of the #2 end.

     This is irritating, but not deadly. It has to matter to somebody, and I guess that

     I'm That Guy. Changeable? Yes. Will I? Dunno.

     

     If mine is the only one, well too bad for me.
