There was an article in MR 20 some years ago about this modeler. He did a great job on this engine and the replica car side. I think the nose is from a BN E unit if I remember correctly. He was going to use the control stand to control one of his trains.

Also in the same vein making rounds on the Internet is the guy who built up a compartment from a VIA passenger car.

I could not help but think that sooner or later, he is going to move unless he stays put. If he stays put, the question remains, how would you put the house on the market? If I remember right, he had a crane put it in the basement prior to the rest of the house being constructed. It's sort of mind boggling and admirable at the same time.

Very impressive. The model of Union Station appears to be very accurate as was the lower level operations. The surrounding buildings and roads are pretty accurate as well, although they have changed somewhat over the years and are a bit different today. Really looks like I remember it as a kid when my grandparents used to take me to Union Station in the '50s. Having an F unit and passenger car in your basement is also quite impressive, definitely one of a kind. He has accomplished a lot on his layout too. Thanks for posting the video.

I remember reading the article in MR magazine 25 years ago. The passenger car was built from scratch. The owner dug out an area next to his basement wall of his house to "extend" the basement. The locomotive was then lowered down into this area by a crane. The loco was then slid into his basement. Once that was complete. The basement wall was put back up, and the hole that was dug was covered by a concrete pad, then dirt and grass was put back. The hole was left next to the house in case he wanted to move. I have the magazine issue somewhere, but I remember there were photos online showing this entire process.

 

 

Just goes to show what can be done when you have the money and set out to do it. Ben Levin of PA. built his own Broadway Limited train complete with an AB E8 unit and three Pennsylvania RR cars. He restored the train to look exactly like it did back in the 1950's and he travels in it with his own crew of 5. Talk about extreme!

I walked along the PRR consist at Spencer as it sat hooked up to a portable generator which I assume was in the place of running the HEP and it was as if I had time traveled to 1950..it just gleamed. I was tempted to knock on the door but couldn't muster the courage or be seen as an obnoxious foamer. Ah what money can buy...seeing is believing.

Ben pulled in with his entire private train to exhibit for National Train Day at Philadelphia 30th street station last May and was given a place at the station to show it. The restoration that his shop did was impeccable. The exterior was perfect in every way while the interior of his private car was customized to suit. People were not allowed to walk through. I believe that Bens Private car uses diesel generator power when the train engine is not running.   I was told that most of the time this train travels the Pennsylvanian route from Philadelphia to Harrisburg or Pittsburgh but I believe that it has gone as far as Chicago. Nice way to travel for the rich!
