David, an On30 loop can make a delightful addition to your layout.  Here are a couple of shots of my setup which is on a higher level than the O gauge trains in a mountain setting.  Just remember that these are scale trains and still require a good sized radius for your curves.  I have a 24" minimum radius on mine.

Definite plans for an On30 coming off a mountain cliff feeding the mainline with raw materials, and a few passenger heads to count. An elevated depot above the mainline. A crane is a definite, but a dump is possible if I go with mining instead of logging. A passenger car will exist, but only one. Maybe a cupola on a passenger car? I wished real hard today, but it didn't help. Really all I need is a locomotive, but other good stuff keeps finding me first.
