Hello all,

 

I would like to upgrade a Atlas/Roco F9 with new wheelsets compatible with the 2 rail standards. I've seen NWSL sells 3 kinds of wheelsets.

 

Which one must I buy please? Where to buy? I need your advice please. I'm french and I'm far from USA. That's not easy for me.

         Hi Jack,

 

            I put the NWSL 2524-6 wheels on mine. These include the axle gear

    as well, which are usually cracked and need replacing. These are specifically

    for the Red Caboose GP9's and Atlas F9's.  They work great just make sure

    you clean them off before installation.

On the several Atlas/Roco F9's I owned the wheel flange profiles were too fat to pass a wheel check using an NMRA gauge.  As a result the F9 would

ride up when running through turnout frogs with guard rails correctly set to the NMRA spec.  At the time (1973) I was raising a young family and hobby funds were tight.  Under advice of mentor John Armstrong I simply ran the locomotive upside down in a cradle and filed the backside of the wheels with the motor running.  I checked progress with the NMRA gauge until the wheel profile fit nicely in it - not precise but it worked.  Today I'd probably just buy the NWSL geared wheel sets.

  Haha, I recently did the same thing to an N scale GP20 with large flanges. I wasn't sure the tiny thing could stand the process but it was no good to me like it was. Happily it came out of the ordeal still running and is now a nice loco for my local turn.....DaveB

The best advice is to contact NWSL direct.  Check the NWSL website.

 

I purchased a set of NWSL P64 wheelsets for the American Models Baldwin S12 loco but they did not match the factory trucks.  I sent NWSL photos and one factory wheelset and a new offering will be available in the coming weeks...all at no extra charge.

Now, I think I have all understood about thee wheels:

 

1. the possibility to file the wheels: that's economic and I still have done this work for a N scale locomotive like Ed and DaveB. It works well.

 

2. And the NWSL products.

 

I found 3 different references for the F9:

 

40"/115

40"/145

40"/172

 

If I've well understood 115 is the finest and 172 the largest size of wheel.

 

The 145 look good. I like.

 

I still have asked NWSL but they don't answer me. So that's the reason I ask here. This forum is a good one, I've found the answers to my questions.

Previously, I had a PDF list from NWSL but checking google with the reference NWSL 2524-6 I found an on-line shop on the NWSL website.

I advice anyone to use the NWSL wheelsets. The price is lw for the fun they provide.
