Atlas SD-40's

I have the Chessie (B&O) SD40 and just love it! Two of my Western Maryland SD40s are being upgraded to the ERR and I'm doing one myself, Chessie (C&O).

 

Lionel will have a tough act to follow with their SD40s...

I have the CNJ SD40 in the blue and yellow scheme and like it a great deal. Atlas went so far as to simulate the spots in which the B&O lettering was simply painted when the units were relettered and renumbered by CNJ....very, very nice.

Marty, I don't know what engines you own, but I will tell you this if you buy an Atlas SD-40 you will not own any better engine than that.

 

I have looked at PDT's web site and their prices seem high.  There are other forum sponsors that have much better deals.

The Atlas SD-40's are wonderful models. Hands down the most detailed SD-40's on the O-Scale market.

These are the last 2 SD40s I picked up...

 

...The CP Rail System SD40 was from the last run in 2010. Who knows if/when Atlas will ever do this model again.

I was thinking of getting the CB&Q engine.  I have looked at alot of other stores and few carry Atlas and none show this engine.  So if there are known sites that have this  I sure would like to know...

PDT is competitive with the other big Atlas dealers on preorders [15%+/- is the norm] but they are one of the few that carry inventory for an extended period of time,expect to pay near or at list after the models have been out a while. For all the importers BTO is the business today leaving few dealers willing to buy for "stock".

I have three Atlas SD40, Chicago Great Western. They are good runner!

I highly recommend these. Mine are among my favorites and see a lot of service. I added the fixed pilots and rooftop details: 

 

I poped for it and have it on order, should be here the early part of next week.  Can't wait for it to show up now.  Will try to post pics and a review when I get it...

If you bought the CB&Q SD40 1st powered unit I believe High Country Hobbies has the 2nd powered unit and the matching un-powered SD40.

In one of Eric's many excellent videos, an Atlas O SD40 had the strongest drawback pull (vs. other locomotives).

Also, several York's ago, Atlas had an SD40 pulling a dummy unit, 2 5 car Gunderson sets and multiple 89' flatcars.

These engines have a diecast frame which makes them unique.

Here's my CNJ 3067, the only one painted in the "Red Baron" scheme.  I am very pleased with it.

 

 

Here's a couple of Atlas SD40's I repainted. Yellow nose engine is powered, the blue nose one is a dummy with an ERR Mini Commander EX to operate the lights and couplers.

 

 

Great engines but they have only two pickup rollers on each engine so I had some back to back switch arrangements where the powered engine would stall. Had to put a single wire tether between the units so both engines pick up rollers were connected together. No more stalling problems.

Just tried to order the dummy from High Country because it shows in stock but when I tried to buy it it shows out of stock.  So I sent them a email, would of been nice to have the pair.  Good looking engines...

3 2 rail SD-40s

I'd be the first to agree that Atlas detail is a cut above everyone else.  Even without an Atlas example to compare, here's a strong contender.  Lionel introduced this SD-40-2 along with their Legacy CC system.

Yeah...atlas everything...spot on detail,,operationally great...hard to find? definetly. I especially note the proper placement of the front truck right up and next to the step well. this thread makes me want to get one ! conrail john

I received the Dummy I ordered on Friday...Great looking piece, weighs about 7:lbs..

I have one question, how do you open the couplers.  It even has switches for the front and rear head lite and the class lites.  So you can set it properly...

Atlas never put the light switches on the 2-rail unpowered units although at one point they said they would be done on last run[did not happen,costs cited]

Atlas dummys come with electrocouplers but they aren't connected to anything inside. You have to install command control electronics inside to get control over them. Otherwise there's no way to open them. ERR sells the Mini Commander EX for dummy engines.

Does anyone know where an Atlas Clinchfield SD40 could be found? Beth had one at PDT a few years ago, but haven't seen one since. I might have to break down and get the new Lionel version, but I would prefer the older Atlas version. Looking for powered and dummy.
