Mike's suggestion is very good. I purchased a bunch of used 40" straights that were damaged on one end from careless demolition. I deleted all 1 1/4 & 1 3/4 pieces where I could and cut custom lengths using these pieces and the add on end pieces. Saved a lot on 4 1/2 & 5 1/2 pieces as well because they were typically used in conjunction with those small pieces. There was a bunch of damaged 40" straights on fleabay yesterday when I was looking.

The plastic end pieces are really more for alignment than anything else. You simply slide the piece (with two or three ties as in MikeCT's) on as in the  photo above and make certain the rail joiners click. If the joiners are not new or if they do not click, your contact is not good.

All joiners should be filled with electrically conductive grease and feeders soldered to the track. To do otherwise is to invite voltage drops or lack of conduction. I have used thousands of feet of Atlas O. It is wonderful track but MUST be prepared properly for excellent operation.
