I see those often on *bay, don't think I agree with the statement that they're hard to find.

I've seen them unyellowed often for sale on the bay too.
I have one in its original set pulled by a C&O 4-4-2
I hand as well. Tried to find a Mopar car but haven't had any luck. Did any one put out Genera Motors Car? Those are two I'm missing my Michigan car set I'm putting together.
They were hard to find in 1971 when uncataloged, but then were cataloged and plenty by 1972.
In 1971 the car came in the uncataloged 1199 Allegheny set, which happened to be my first Lionel set, still have it today.
Quite some years ago there was an article in the LCCA's The Lion Roars magazine regarding the background of the 9042 Autolite boxcar.

I wish my dad were still alive to ask him where he bought it.

Gentlemen,
They were Allegheny Train Sets sold at the Gas Stations, in the Pittsburgh western Pa area, and depending on where you lived, not all that many sets were available, thru out the USA, however lots of sets were actually made, that is why you are having trouble finding them in certain areas of the country. That single Ford Box Car was in every 1199 set, and as far as I know, it was never reissued. We bought one of the Lionel 1199 sets as a Christmas present for one of my cousins in 1971 at one of the old SUNOCO gas station here in western Pa. If you live down south or out west you still might have trouble getting one at a train show, in your area, use the Internet to find one.

The Allegheny is also the first Lionel set l purchased. The engine is the only piece of the set l still own.
The car was available for separate sale too. I purchased one when they were released. That one is long gone, but I have a couple of others that I picked up within the last ten years.
