I have to believe that the forum has to generate a lot of business for the forum sponsors when someone posts a new item like the Lionel Berks.  I know of 2 folks that have ordered one of these after the forum members took pictures and posted videos.

I'd be curious if they see a spike in orders when the pictures and videos arrive on the forum.  It has to be a win / win to sponsor here.

Personally, I think forum sponsorship is mostly like vitamins - a cumulative effect that just brings healthier business over time.  I became a sponsor partly just to support the forum and also because it brings permission/no guilt about talking about my books for sale on the forum.

  1. My books sell about ten a day as what I consider "background noise" sales: they just seem to sell than many on an average every day when nothing  else happens (no mention of them on the forum or anywhere else) .  Not sure why.  Maybe its the "vitamins" - maybe its all due to Amazon.
  2. If anyone mentions one of my books about 'Streets in a thread, sales spike by an extra 10-15 (over the normal ten a day) during the next twenty four hours or so.
  3. If the title of a thread mentions one or both books, the spike is about twice as many sales.
  4. To put that in perspective though.  When the first issue of OGR came out with the print advertisements (two small ones in the magazine) sales spiked for a week and cumulatively over that week were a total of about 300-330 above the ten per day.  From this I conclude that while forum advertising is good - particularly at reaching really "committed" model railroaders and hobby "opinion makers," there are three to five times as many folks who read the magazines as the forum.

It is a logical part of a comprehensive advertising program. The idea is to keep your name in front of the a target audience who buy these products.

I see it as a good investment in two ways. By sponsoring the OGR Forum, you are supporting a group that has a vested interest in the continuance of the hobby. Then there are the sales that are realized as a result of the direct offerings on the Forum and having your name continually in view of the members.
