I understand the allure Black Friday has on many but since I have worked in the retail industry for 35 years I am okay to not go shopping.  Since I was not going to go shopping I did something different.

My sister has her first and only child, a girl, who is 3 and she has an older half brother who is 12. He has shown great interest in toy trains and the hobby. I finally got the family to make the drive to my place last night to give him a portable layout, a couple of Lionel trains, some buildings and stuff to scenic the layout, and a KW transformer to power it. The layout is all O27 and he can run two trains at once. I showed him how to use the KW and we ran tinplate trains upstairs last night for some time. I wired the layout with a trailer plug harness so he can unplug the transformer and plug it in for now. I will work with him on teaching him basic electricity and wiring for future train stuff. During the train running my sister mentioned she was going to look for a Brio wooden train for her daughter. I had kept my son's Brio long after he grew out of them and wanted to toss them so they found a new home also.

It felt good to help and promote the train hobby instead of being in the Friday madness.

I just wanted to share, thank you.

Jeff, great story. It's so nice to read something positive like that. I hope the boy enjoys playing with the trains.

I hate Black Friday just as much as you and I only spent a few years in retail. I never shop on BF. Although I might go to a train store but that's it. And the folks who went shopping on Thanksgiving should be ashamed of themselves. I could see getting some last minute needs at a supermarket in the morning but to go to places like Walmart or K-Mart or Sears or whoever else decided to open in the afternoon on the actual holiday just to shop makes me sick to my stomach. Whatever happened to tradition? Remember when stores weren't even open on Sunday? Next thing you know the stores will be open on Christmas. Well my protest is I will not patronize those stores on the holiday.  If everyone did that maybe this nonsense would stop. Sorry for the rant.
