I have just found a 2046 Lionel steamer which I probably bought at an auction 20 or 30 years ago. I ran it in conventional mode and it ran great; great smoke, and lots of pulling power. I cleaned and lubed the rods, lubricated the gears, cleaned the wheels and pick up rollers. Didn't do any harm, still runs like a champ. I serviced the whistle motor which now works great. I would like to service the engine motor, but the boiler is a little different than any I have worked on in the past. Can somebody familiar with this engine give me instructions on how to remove the boiler front and boiler to get to the motor. I feel pretty comfortable with servicing the motor once I get to it.

Taylora,
I have the 2056. There are two screws under the cab and one recessed under the pilot truck in the center of the frame. There is a small screw on top of the smoke box that will allow you to remove the front of the boiler.
Hope this helps,
Richard
There is also a screw on top of the boiler near the cab that needs removal.

Yes, Larry is correct. I forgot about that one on top.
Thanks Larry.

Thanks guys!!! The engine ran great before motor servicing, and runs great now and should for a long time. Funny thing, I have the KLINE Lionel repair manual which has no information on the 2046. I also have the very expensive 4 volume set of service manuals for Lionel. There is a parts list for the 2046, but no diagrams, service or repair information. Very odd!
One small tip. When servicing cross mounted motors, it's hard to keep the brushes in the holders to get the brush plate back in place. I keep all my expired and outdated credit and other plastic cards. Great material for all kinds of shims. In this case, I cut a strip of card about 2" long and 1" wide. I cut a notch 1/4 " by 1/4" in the center of one side. Place the notch over the hole where the armature shaft goes and squeeze the card against the brushes. Slide the plate and card over the shaft, press the plate into position, and slide the card out. Keeps everything lined up till you get the plate screws in. Hope this tip helps somebody. Thanks again for the accurate info.
