A good pal of mine just texted me this about a book he's looking for. He's read about it but never seen it, nor knows the title:

The guy apparently got out of high school in 1941, and hoboed from early 1942 to early 1946. He apparently took many photos during his travels and the family has provided his photos for publication. He apparently took lots of photos of MAIN trains and other such trains and his work is being published  as a record of trains of that era.

Does anyone have a clue what book he's referring to? It might not be out yet from way he describes it...

He hoboed through WWII?  As a draft dodger, as he sounds like that age.....?  It was during WWII that a hobo showed up at our house, barely remembered, and my mother gave him a sandwich.   We were not far from the RR.  These were on MAINE railroads, including possibly Maine two foot gauge?  Never thought before of hobos on the narrow gauge.....must have existed...two foot cars don't offer many places to hide.

I misread it?  Not Maine trains but Main Line trains or name trains?  During WWII, with security, wasn't it harder to photograph railroads, AND wasn't  it harder to be a train-hopping hobo, with concern about sabotage, such as that tunnel in Pa.?  Of course, nothing like now.

MAIN trains, were Military Authorization Identification Number trains, IIRC.
