Anyone a bit more familiar with LIRR Books able to recommend a book that outlines the LIRR's impact on the eastern LI communities on the Mountauk (Preferred) and/or Greenport branch lines?. I'm interested in the impact on the Hamptons, farming community, maritime community, etc that the LIRR had.

Disclaimer - I spend my summers in Southampton, right on the ocean. Have ridden he LIRR countless times both in coach on the "old trains" and the "new" bi-level fleet currently in use. Also had a few cab rides in the "new" DE/DM30 diesels on the Montauk branch. Also often visit the Railroad Museum of Long Island in Riverheard (haven't been to Greenport location in some time). I'm not an expert on the LIRR...only just familiar with mostly the Montauk branch from Hampton Bays east to Montauk and am interested, as outlined above, in that line's impact to life there from the "early years" to today. Also continually baffled/amazed at the LIRR's use of yard switchers as "high speed" passenger locomotives in push/pull service in years gone by. Just fascinating to me! (Also wish I got one of those Nassau Hobby special MTH LIRR MP15 switchers.... )

Thank you John. That is somewhere I haven't been in a long time.....the transit museum! I'm planning on taking a LONG vacation in Mid/End August to the family compound in the Hamptons on Eastern Long Island so I may stop in the city to visit the transit museum and the 9/11 WTC museum.

Anyone else with some book recommendations? I know I've got an "Images of America: Southampton NY" book out in Southampton on the shelf that has some great old photos of the town, including the railroad. Those Images of America books are really, really cool and I'm a huge fan. I've got a few here in Maryland. Love them.

Thanks!

Hi, SJC.

I have few suggestions for you. Books specifically about the LIRR's east end are pretty much non-existent; however, there are some excellent histories of the railroad which include east end coverage.

I'd recommend Ron Ziel's "Steel Rails to the Sunrise" - a revised edition was issued in 1987 - and Mr. Ziel's "The Long Island Rail Road in Early Photographs". Another fine book which was recently released is "The Long island Rail Road Company: A History 1834-1965" by Robert Sturm. The late Vincent Seyfried authored a monumental seven volume series titled "The Long Island Rail Road: A Comprehensive History". I recommend the Seyfried books highly. Unfortunately, they are hard to come by and typically command premium prices. That said, the Ziel books are superb and Mr. Sturm's volume is well worth acquiring also.

Although you asked specifically about books, Railroad Video Productions offers a number of excellent LIRR DVDs. Included are cab ride videos as well as trackside programs which offer good coverage of the east end. I have many of these programs and recommend them highly. Here's a link to the Railroad Video Productions webpage of Anchor Videos from whom I buy many of my DVDs. You can find the various LIRR DVDs on this page.

I hope this information is of some use to you.

Sorry for not getting back sooner - didn't see your post until now. I figured LIRR East End specific books were non-existant but you've given me some good info...I'll have to check out Amazon later. I'm think maybe a trip to the RMLI gift shop next time I'm on the Island may also be on the "to do list".
