Surprisingly those "flared fans" are correct for a real GP20. I never did find out why EMD had those flared attachments on the GP20 cooling fans, as that was the ONLY locomotive model to have those flared attachments.

HW,

the builders notes that I found were that EMD used flared fans through April of 1961. 

The NYC builders notes have July 1961 for the first order, which would mean that the pan style would be correct. 

Builders photo of 6110 (7/61).

Note this was the only GP20 with the white pilot stripes, so I won't be numbering it 6110.

Although... If you have some data in your files, I bet I could flare them.

No, I am unable to refute that information. However, like the unit with the white pilot stripes! Why not make that particular "special, one-of-a-kind" GP20?

I actually have the stripes, too. But... I don't decal. Yet.

I know the feeling.  With all the fire works going off right now and tomorrow night looks like I will do some more conversions. I don't know about you but all that noise reminds me of other things. Need to occupy my mind.   Also contact me off line. My have a donor shell and chassis for one of your projects.

I really had no idea, and don't have any drawings of the GP20 low short hood in my collection. Maybe you could contact the Western Pacific Museum, out in Portola, California, as they have a beautiful, fully restored & functional WP GP20. Maybe someone there could photograph and measure the front nose.

I'd be happy to, but our GP20 (WP 2001) is a high short hood unit.

Don't forget this project...

I really need to get this off my plate, it's just sitting there. Now I'm wondering if I should strip the paint and try again, with a different one (Badger Stynylrez Black primer and Pledge acrylic floor wax).

And I thought I was bad with projects sitting but not finished. About a year in a half now?. Then again I guess the comment about not painting grab irons again is also a dead issue since the good idea fairy has struck about painting  

Well. Thanks hasn't been exactly stagnant for a year. 

I did use the pilots to redesign and rebuilt them using the new GP7 pilot spacer and coupler mount. Which are much closer to scale now. 

We did this learning our lessons from doing the Atlas pilots.
