I like cabeese at the end of my trains.
The Montana Rail Link often uses cabeese at the end of their locals, for backup moves I understand. So that is a modern RR where I can run modern equip with a caboose. We need more MRL offerings!

My time era is through the late fifties. Cabeese on freight, combine on a mixed train. No ETD or FRED. I do remember in the sixties the Erie placed a red flag in the knuckle of the last car of the freight train when they ran the caboose behind the Alco RS3.

Taking my cue from NASA, I run a caboose with both a FRED and ETD on the rear coupler.
You can never be too safe.
