For the first time, I'm interested in a couple of the new LC+ engines.  I've been running Legacy since it first came out.  I really don't want to have a bunch of remotes laying around the layout....ideally the Legacy remote would operate the LC+ engines.

I can understand that a LC or LC+ engine wouldn't be able to operate a Legacy engine but I'm hoping it would work in the opposite.....

Is that possible or are these technologies mutually exclusive?

Is there any way to operate a LC+ engine (with the LC remote) on a track wired for Legacy?  I would want the ability to run either on a track without changing any wires. So if I place a Legacy engine on the track, I pick up my Legacy remote...and if I place a LC+ engine on the track, I use the LionChief remote.

You can run LC/+ engines just fine on tracks running Legacy/TMCC, DCS or even conventional(to a point).  The signals do not interfere with each other.

As to the original question, as of this time Legacy can not operate LC/+ engines.  There are options with the LionChief universal remote to run up to three engines from that one remote.  In addition every LionChief/Plus engine that is released from 2017 onward will be equipped with BlueTooth technology allowing control fro the LionChief app on mobile devices.

As for actually using your legacy remote to address your LC engine, that too is possible.  One of my pet projects I need to get back to when I have the time.  My test model now can control any engine that the Universal remote can control without having to modify anything, just plug into the base and go.  This is from last year: https://youtu.be/5DhIC7HPsyU

Your system looks pretty good, something that Lionel should have done.  Any plans to sell these?

The long and short of it is... Maybe.  I've been busy with other projects and work lately, and haven't had the time to do a lot more work on this.  At this time I'm also not happy with the cost involved to get a plug-and play unit running.  It may still be feasible for someone that really wants to run their LC/+ from TMCC/Legacy, but a price tag in the $150-$200 range for a finished product is about twice what I originally was hoping for.

I will eventually be getting back to this project, and when I do I hope to build a couple test units to send out to folks to be tested out, then from there fix any problems that come up.

In the Spring of 2016 Jon Zahornacky was asked if Legacy will ever operate LC and LC+.  He responded that it was unknown at that time.

As discussed in many other threads, Lionel could produce their own bridge device any time they wish to do so.  I would expect that it has much more to do with marketing, a little to do with demand, and nothing to do with the ability to design such a thing.

With the introduction of the new Bluetooth LionChief App, I would be fairly disappointed if the iCab app is not updated at some point to allow it to also control Bluetooth enabled LC/+ engines, though I could see that not happening for the same marketing reasons that would discourage allowing control from a cab2.
