went to York for the day Thursday picked up a real nice cheap atlas sw-8. didn't realize it at the time but it is 2 rail. can you just swap out the trucks to convert it to 3 rail or is it a real project? anyone have any idea? thanks in advance joee

Little more involved. The pilots are different. No electro-couplers. And the electronics are different.

ok thanks. what do you think about swapping out the shell with a cheap (if I can find one) 3 rail loco? think that might work? then just resell the 2 rail one.
Do you really think that a 2-Rail SCALE modeler will purchase an Atlas switcher mechanism with a "cheap" shell from a 3-Rail model, which doesn't fit properly?
There are (3) different three rail offerings in the 12 or more years Atlas has been offering the SW 8/9 series. First 3 rail offerings had Dallee electronics, usually found relatively cheap. Until recently, most had TMCC electronics. These still command pretty good prices. Newest issues have ERR electronics. I have an older 3-rail Pennsy SW 9 that I've been working-on, found relatively cheap at a train show.
