Since coming into O scale in 2005, I've seen quite a few of these old KTM/US hobbies brass models, but this is definitely the best one! I've always thought that KTM did a wonderful job on these as it pertains to capturing the body proportions of the prototype, especially for being an early 70's brass import. Looks like it will command the price of a later model Overland diesel! Pretty sweet indeed!

You are right - it is already way above the Overland, at least the early ones that fall apart. These things are rugged and good looking, and will run a lot longer than some more recent imports.
But you are getting a $600 model with a $400 paint job. Nothing wrong with that.
Opinion.
Yes, it's a very nice looking model but beware, typically, they don't run all that well......at least not by today's standards. They tend to draw more amps than newer models so if you want to install DCC you'll probably need a larger decoder. Because the gear reduction is done at the axle, the motor, tower (tank drive) and universals are turning fairly fast and generate vibration, noise and wear. All of this can be tweaked and improved. I only mention these things so you're aware. Shoot, it may run flawlessly, but the seller says, "it may need lubrication". Often times that's code for, it's kinda noisy. Anyway, it still probably runs far better than the early to mid run OMI anything.
If you end up with it, congratulations! I really do hope it runs as nice as it looks.

I'm not bidding on this one, although I did consider it because I model the Santa Fe from this era. It would fit in and look nice with the Overland SD75m's that I have, but I'll just be a spectator. I already have two of these units. One is an F45 painted in Santa Fe blue and yellow scheme and the other is an FP45 painted in Milwaukee Road which will get repainted in the warbonnet scheme. I've sold the complete drives with motor and kept the body, frame and trucks to add another drive to them someday. Both are dummies now with CLW non-geared wheelsets.
Jay, you're right about them drawing more amps than newer models. They draw more amps than my CLW models with the same old open frame motor.
Bob2, I agree with you about the ruggedness and looks of these. The drive is very robust and I believe they weigh in the neighborhood of 7-9 lbs. I love the weight and sturdy feel of these and how the truck springs compress when placing them on the track.
