Confused, upgrade software?

The new Legacy system will, likely, come will the latest version (1.6).  When a new version becomes available you will download it to your PC.  The LSU software will prompt you to insert modules; once for the remote and once for the base.  You can use the same module, if you like.

Are these USB modules?  

Generally, you download the latest update(s) from the Lionel site:

...which you find by going to Lionel.com and clicking on Support, then selecting Service Documents, then typing in 990  which brings up the update links. Lionel's website needs some update itself actually .

Next you download the update to your Windows computer, storing it on the file system somewhere.

And then, bring up the LSU, connect your base either with a com port (or wifi if you have the LCS wifi module). The options are then available to write to a Lionel black module(s) using the port on the Legacy base. You can write either the base or handheld update to the module(s) this way. Then you use the module(s) to update the base, or to update the handheld following the instructions in the Legacy manual (holding a button and turning on the base or the handheld with the module inserted). The modules are repeatedly writeable. You only need one. These modules are not USB modules but are similar to the orange modules that are sent with Legacy engines, etc.

There is a thread about a year ago of how you can pry (it's glued together) a blue module (they come with the 990 product...usually with an out of date Legacy update) and move a short (or some such) on a pin(s) on the chip inside. Then it becomes a writeable module.

The whole comm port attach to you PC thing. 

I don't ever see me taking my base and the connecting to my wife's pc which does NOT have a comm port.

You can purchase a com to usb converter cable which would work for your wife's computer. However you can also avoid the whole computer issue and purchase updated modules from Charles Ro Trains. I think they do that as a service as well as selling the modules. Maybe other sources will become available.

The legacy system is great. You will have so much fun running trains with it. Very easy to learn. I had watched some utube videos about it and they were very helpful. Also have the MTH system and it also works great. I thought I had fun running train before I went with the remotes this just adds a whole new level. 

No they are not USB Modules. You need a black module  looks exactly like the Orange Module that comes with the new Legacy engines. Purchase 2, make one for the remote and one for the base. It is easier to make a module for each - just make sure you label the module. Cost runs from $14 ~ $20. See of Charlie has them and have him send with the Legacy 990 system you just bought.

CJACK, I recall that thread, bottom line you need to also solder as well. So I would suggest the investment in the black modules, you can store all your train data on them as well. 

The Black modules are NOT a USB connected module. They are exactly the same size and feel as the Orange modules. They just perform different functions.

Many of dealers have the capability of upgrading so you need to find a local dealer if that is what you want. I wouldn't was the time or money sending it back to Lionel. The upgrade is relatively easy.

Sorry guys, I'll just buy the Moduels when they come out.  

I understand the process once you have new Moduels for cab and base. 

NO local dealers in this area. Charlie Ro is 65 miles from my house  

I don't want to move my base, download this to that etc, this cable that cable etc   Sorry just me

They should have made the LSU site with downloadable files to a USB device then right into the Cab and Base?

Or am I missing something?

The black module item number is 6-37125. I was able to find them at Tom's Trains in Ardsly, NY. I paid $19.99 for each one. I purchased 3. One for the Remote upgrade, One for the base and one for data.

You can Google the part number and they come up.

Guys it's not the module or where to get it it's the process of upgrading the cab and base using the LSU software

I thought you could download upgrades from the LSU site right into a module. 

But I guess you can't?

The BASE MUST be connected to PC no matter what right???

For writing to a module, the base and LSU is the only way. I look for dealers to offer updated modules if not Lionel, and Charles Ro does last I noticed.

Got it Thank you!!  So Module is only good if willing to use the LSU software and base is connected to a PC. In some way like a comm port.

I see you live in Massachusetts.  I am in Dedham.  If you want to come over some night or weekend, I will be happy to walk you through the LSU and show you how to use it to upgrade.  It is very easy.  Sometimes hands on is a better way.  If you have a laptop, bring it and we will set it up for LSU.  I am at   martyfitz44@aol.com.  Charlie Ro has the modules in stock.  I upgraded about 30 last week for him.

Just received my Legacy System from Charlie Ro yesterday. 

Its charging up!!

Just wondering how long charge holds on Cab remote?  Also does it have an auto shut off if you leave it on accidentally?

I've never run the batteries down using it in say a few hours, but the original batteries did not stay charged unused very long...maybe a week, or so. The remote does have an auto shutoff that you can set as well as a backlight auto shutoff you can set.

I replaced the rechargeable GB or whatever with Imedion Powerex 2400 mAh NiMH batteries. They hold their charge for months.

Eneloop batteries are equally as good or better some think. I've also use rechargeable Duracell Energizers and they were ok as well. The batteries should all be 24 mAh NiMH batteries.
