Dam (beaver) good idea!
It's not mentioned in the press release, but the beaver has a name: Cornelius. This was the middle name of William Cornelius VanHorne, who was the driving force in building the CP out to British Columbia, and then stretching the route across the "shield" of Ontario to reach the Eastern cities of Toronto, Quebec City and Montreal.
That's great. Now they need to bring back the original CP paint scheme in tuscan and grey. Lose the red!
Great to hear this - it's a wonderful logo.
As for the "CP" logo, I'd prefer they put that one away, and start spelling out "Canadian Pacific" again.

Nope. Glad to see it.
Very nice!!! Always a favorite of mine.

Noooooo! LOL I guess I'm in the minority but I love the unspoiled fire-engine red look!
My pet peeve is the CP on the nose. That has NEVER looked right to me. The letter spacing or something is all wrong.
The movie "Rocky Mountain Express" shows VanHorne and the building of the trans-canada railroad. A truly amazing feat. Beautiful movie - I often just watch it for the scenery and the steam engine.
Nice to see The "Beaver"(Cornelius) come back to the spotlight! A sign of things to come? Lets hope so!
So glad to see this!
Now, about 2816 . . .?
Nah................
That looks fantastic!
Didn't they have Cornelius on an all-gold emblem in the late 1990's or early 2000's as well?
Those old school versions of the beaver has always been my favorite railroad logo.
This is, at least, a step in the right direction.
I always liked the look of the CB beaver logo, and am glad that they are bringing it back in their new design. And finding out that he had a name all along is cool. Welcome back, Cornelius.
I have the Lionel operating box based on the 6464 body in CP spelled out.. Silver body with classic beaver logo. I got it because of the beaver logo. Do not know if Cornelius owned such a car in reality.

They're sprucing up CP for when Hunter tries to merge CSX with CP (or is it CP with CSX).
Speaking of Canada and beavers, I am watching the show Gold Rush. The guys mining in Colorado have beavers block the culvert for the stream they divert to fill their wash pond. The show then puts up a balloon fact about the largest beaver dam in the world is in Canada. It is 3000ft long and can be seen from space.
Since beavers are builders that block movement, which trait does the logo infer?
Awesome! Maybe they can paint a Milwaukee Road heritage engine too? That might be asking too much. It would be cool though.

I like both, a lot.
They should paint their new engines in both ways. Some, in the bold red with Canadian Pacific in large white block lettering. And, some in maroon/gray with Canadian Pacific written in script lettering.
With beavers on both.
Remember Beavers are Nature's Engineers and the MIT Mascot!
I would love it if CP brought back the Maroon/Grey scheme with beaver crest. But I appreciate CP is a business and concerned mainly with making money.
Still there is a lot of celebration planned up here for the 150th anniversary of Confederation. And CP, publically owned, profit-driven concern that it is, played a huge role in the development of the country . . . as did that lowly beaver, BTW.
Seems to me, CP is missing a huge PR opportunity if they don't run 2816 this celebration year!
2816 is a question mark for sure. How much time is left on the boiler tubes before the next overhaul? She has been hidden away in storage here in Calgary and the crew that ran her was disbanded.
I want to see 2816 travel to Ottawa pulling a consist of FP7 ABA and the Royal Canadian cars. That would be a fitting tribute to what the railway has meant to our country's history.
Not sure if it could happen, given the logistics and time frame involved

Gentlemen,
The Beev on the CP insig looks way cool, definitely a big improvement!

Man do I love beaver!!!
Here is the first version of "Cornelius" before he was know as such.
Old caboose stove door cover I found while camping in Albert Canyon in the 1980's
Wow! That is quite a find!
I believe this is the CPR's first version of the beaver logo. This item dates from the late 1880's(I believe), as the beaver looks more like a muskrat. Of course he has evolved like the Railway has over the years and it's good to have him back

I wouldn't get my hopes up... The new CEO is a dead ringer for H Harrison.... http://www.theglobeandmail.com...ceo/article31007208/
I guess CN rail and CP rail are North American railways now. As far as I'm concerned you might as well stick Punxsutawney Phil on the nose. At least he can predict the weather, (or can he)
No one answered my question about which trait of the beaver is the reason it was on the herald. It's 2017. Let the beaver rest in peace. Eh?

I don't think any "trait" of the beaver made it a choice for the CP herald. It's simply the fact the fur trade, specifically for beaver pelts to ship to Europe to be made into beaver hats, played a huge role in opening up the land that eventually became Canada.

No worries; the movement is only blocked for so long and then nature takes its course. Every few years, a beaver-dam breaks and washes out a chunk of transportation artery. Busy little fellas, ain't they?
