I am putting a Cruise Cmdr M into a 2-8-0 Union Pacific Consolidated engine and not sure about the connector J4 pins 1 and 2. I think I am supposed to attach pin #1 to the R2LC pin #24 which is the serial data out...it's also the red wire going to the tether...looks like. The instructions say that in a couple different ways, but then on page 4 of the instructions it says "Finally, the serial data must be connected to the Cruise “M” for speed step and setting the configuration information. This connection does not exist on Lionel locos, but does exist in K-Line cruise locos".

I think they mean to say you don't have to do the wire connection for K-Line Cruise locos, but has to be done by you for the Lionel ones. Or better, instead of the word "exist", the word "pre-exist" is what is meant.

Sorry if I am doing too much thinking and reading too much into this, just want to clarify what I'm doing here.

Also what is the wire on R4 Pin #2 ("serial data out") for on this Lionel engine, if anything. Is that wire meant for diesels where the sound board is present inside the engine and not the tender?

This kit is meant for steamers, but most of the examples are for diesels.

The only pin I routinely use on the 10-pin connector is pin one to serial data.  If it's a diesel, I have used the optional ditch light LED outputs, and I occasionally use the marker LED outputs for diesel or steam.  I've never found a use for the "serial out" on pin-2, it doesn't seem to actually be serial data, but I've never bothered to track down what it actually does.  I'd say 90% of my CC-M installations have one wire from the connector, pin-1 to pin-24 of the R2LC socket.
