While not as spectacular as a train ride in the Rockies my wife and I had a great week end at the Valley Railroad in Essex CT. A ride (with drinks) in a former NH parlor car behind steam followed by a cruse up the Connecticut river. Later that day we enjoyed the dinner train, great service and food. I believe the kitchen car is uncommon as it was built for the Army in 1953 with coal burning stoves for troop train use during Korea, not certain if it saw any use then.
The parlor car is somewhat famous as Malcolm Little as he was known then was a steward on the car. Spike Lee used it in his movie about Malcolm X.
On the way home a stop at the Brandford trolley museum in East Haven for a quick trolley ride.
A pleasant way to spend some fine train time not too far from home.
