Here's a link to help you locate the pin 5. It's a standard, so they are all the same..

I think the video violates the laws of physics, but the agreed on cure is to run the ground wire.

Easy way of getting the pin 5 ground.  Get the wye cable that is used for tmcc Dcs legacy connection.  Cut the head off the end destined for Dcs.  Strip the wire back.  You will see a metal shielding in the cable. The shielding is connected to pin 5. Just connect the shielding to your ground plane wire. You should make sure that the electrical outlet you are using is also properly grounded

Is the Y cable (Lionel part # 61000RS232) the one you are referring to the same as the one that comes with the Legacy 990 unit?

 

If so do you happen to know where to buy one? I have been hunting one and having difficulty locating them. There doesn't seem to be a regular Lionel 6-?????? number for the cable just a part number.
