Good morning

I have an MTH DCS 44tonner that takes off at full speed dark and silent when track power is turned on. No stopping it. this happens pretty much all the time  on numerous places on the layout mostly  on sidings and spur tracks. been doing real OK up until yesterday afternoon. This locomotive always had this issue of missing the watch dog but now it takes off and I think always in reverse.

What should I check first ? or is this another one for the shop ?

I don't know Joe, I'm thinking it is the locomotive and not the track.   I was just now operating it on a different part of the layout where it see's the watchdog signal, stalled on a switch and shutdown, when I pushed it past the tiny spot where it stalled it took off full speed dark and silent. Normally it just restarts. Really don't want to take the shell off this but maybe I have to. I'll look for a bad wire.

Thanks

I can picture this happening with a proto-2 engine with a weak battery.  It  stalls and then you give it a nudge and away it might go.

However brand new 44 tonner with no battery  How long do the sounds continue on after track power down?  Maybe the capacitor is not doing it's job. Sounds to me like a return.

I notice now the experts suggest a conventional reset  on PS-3s as maybe the first step. hope it works.

These engines can lock a reset in conventional while running normal in DCS.  They also can lock in reverse what seems more often than not.  First, you can try a simple feature reset and see if this clears it.  This has been working for me.   Or if you want to know for sure, place on a conventional track and apply 12V.  If it starts up and moves it is locked in a direction conventionally.  Do the unlock procedure and stop it, than do a conventional reset (Alternatively you can try the convent reset but this can be difficult to get to take if the train is moving).  G

Good morning

OK I tried the locomotive again, when it miss's watchdog signal (what it does frequently) the sounds do come up however the engine takes off full bore before sound comes on, I pick the locomotive up before sound.  I  keep a good grip on the engine when I apply track power, the remote either has no effect or is to slow. Miss watch dog signal and I can feel it go into forward for a spilt second then go into reverse at full speed. I just now did the feature reset as suggested.  Going to try again and see what happens

Have you done the conventional reset?  No DCS signal (TIU off or not in circuit). Using transformer (NOT remote), 1W 5B at half second intervals. Timing critical. 2 toots if it takes; if not keep trying.

On a 44-ton, sounds should continue for at least 2 seconds after a power off.  If they don't, call MTH service (not LHS)

From what I remember, I did a conventional reset on mine when it did this. I used 10 volts ??, right away hitting the buttons. Although the engine started moving, it took the reset, sounded the horn and stopped.

I have a Z4000 which made it easier I believe. Maybe I should have just connected my test leads or put the engine on rollers? It worked on the rails so I was happy.

Ok did a feature reset using the remote. Seems to work OK. Thank You !!    I wanted to see what would happen if I toggled it on from a dead track after I had main track power on,no watch dog signal. Flip the switch on and it and another engine sat there dark and silent until I started them.

Another observation:   Somewhere in the course of the past hour I had an RS11 PS3 do the samething as the 44T was doing, also I had a hard time pulling it off the inactive list, then there was bad response when trying to edit sounds in either engine, the bell would stay on , the horn would stay on, very poor throttle response or direction was part time. this was both engines doing this at the same time on same track also getting erroneous message when editing sounds. sound level 3 ? levels show all over the range but no change. zeroed out the levels to get them back.  After all this and running the 44T control still not good. Then I unplugged my MTH WIFI and now normal DCS remote control ?  Also got the 44T to miss watchdog and it started up but did not move, just the way it suppose to. the poor remote response effected other PS3 engines.  A lot of this seem to start when upgraded to Version 6.  I know I could be wrong, also my WIFI not working at all now. Message no TIU found ?

Nothing better to do on rainy day

I am not up to level 6 on my DCS set-up, maybe level 4.2 on the remote control and DCS unit. Took my DCS unit and remote to Ready To Roll in Miami FL and let them upgrade it for me(last year) as my 2 attempts failed to work.

Not sure if I want to upgrade to 6.0 or not on my DCS system. It works good for me now so I am not really interested in the new updates.

Joe I'm all done for now. At York MTH tried to get my wifi to work and they couldn't either, Jason is working on it . Thank you for your concern                                                                                                                                                                clem
