Help!  My layout it under DCS control and works great.  However
, I have a couple of Lionel legacy locos.  I purchased a TMCC command base and DCS cable.  I followed the hook up procedure in the DCS book.  The hand held DCS controller recognized the TMCC loco, I named it,etc.  When I select the TMCC and press start up nothing happens.  What am I missing?  Any help would be appreciated.

The DCS software will allow you to add a tmcc engine even if you don't own one.

The key  as Marty mentioned is knowing the TMCC address, That the one you would use to run the engine with a a cab1/2.

It kind of goes like this.... Go to Menu/ engine set up/ Add engine /add TMCC engine . A list of letters comes up, name the engine and hit the "D: for done,  next a list of TMCC address comes up and since you're not really sure what it is make one up. any ID number.

Now you have a engine added to the dcs remote that  won't run(it'll be in the inactive list)  but you have a engine  to work with . The last step is to create a new  working  TMCC address with   Menu/System/ Engine set up/Edit engine/Edit  address. Select the TMCC engine with the fake TMCC address and follow the on screen instructions on the dcs remote.(place run/program etc.) If it takes you should get a short whistler blast.  good luck

All you may need to do is edit the TMCC engine's TMCC ID# to anything that you want it to be, then DCS will know where it is.

Proceed as follows:

  • Select the TMCC engine in the DCS engine list and make it the active engine, appearing in the DCS Remote's LCD window
  • Press: Menu/System/Engine Setup/Edit Engine/Edit Engine Address
  • Follow instructions on the screen regarding setting the engine's RUN/PROG switch to PROG. If you have to remove the engine from the tracks to access the switch, turn track power off before you lift it off the tracks to set the switch, then turn it back on again after setting the engine back down
  • Enter the TMCC ID# that you want the engine to have
  • Follow instructions on the screen regarding setting the engine's RUN/PROG switch back to RUN. Again, if you have to remove the engine from the tracks to access the switch, turn track power off before you lift it off the tracks to set the switch, then turn it back on again after setting the engine back down.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

Just a couple of things that I've messed up in the past..... The command base wall power adaptor must have 3 prongs and plug into a properly 3 prong wall outlet.

You did you a wire from the "U" connection to an outside rail right?

You may get lucky if you try TMCC ID #1`.

Does the engine start up with lights and sound? it shouldn't .

One more thing.. you should get a short whistle blast when trying  to change the engine's TMCC address. The blast indicates the new TMCC address  was successful.

Confirmed yes it is the 3 prong ground power adapter that came with the TMCC command base.  I am going to disconnect the Power Commander this evening and carefully reconnect it, I did run a wire from the "U" connection to the outside rail.

After I name the locomotive it does prompt me for a TMCC address...it gives a series of number that can be scrolled through...does it matter which one I pick?  I have selected 1 and on a retry I selected 4, but still I do not hear the locomotive horn blow.

Since you are running DCS and using the remote. This is how the Command base should be hooked up to the TIU . Wire connecting from the U terminal connected to the common out put that runs to the track.

Another thing to check if you have a CAB1:

press the engine button

Enter the engine TMCC ID Example 89 (TMCC default is 01 try that and see what happens)

Press AUX 1 and engine should start up.

Another thing to Check is the antenna wire on the engine its self.

I just finished a rehab of an engine. One of the issues was the antenna was loose. Just enough for me to load into DCS and change TMCC ID but when it started moving it would lose the signal. That was just some of the problems.

You can learn more from GGG, Gunrunner, and Marty and others on trouble shooting TMCC engines.

Yes it matters. The TMCC address is the one you would use to run the engine with a cab-1.  The dcs remote must know this address when the list of TMCC addresses  comes up.

However since we don't know what it is, we create a new one by   editing  the one that doesn't work by placing the run/program to p[rogram etc.

Too bad you don't have a cab-1,. It make trouble shooting much easier.
