Didn't some dealer have these for $175 a coupe of months ago? I bought one of these Williams plastic GG1's (PennCentral) new 5 - 6 years ago for $270 and thought that I was getting a bargain - and I was, at the time. And, I had to fix it right out of the box! (Broken solder joint on one of the pickup wires; no big deal, and a nice loco, but I though Wms was "perfect"...).

I've seen brass Weaver GG1's go for less than $699.

Your right Marty about the sticker price but for Bachmann posting a price of $699 may turn off newer hobbyist just getting into the hobby.

The cost of new trains and the space required to build even a modest layout are deterrents to anybody getting into the hobby.
IMHO, there is no point in worrying about the hobby's future. I think there will always be a relatively small group of people who enjoy "O" gauge trains, be it collecting or operating. The size of that group will shrink and grow, as will the size and number of companies serving the "O" gauge community.

Remember what Alfred E. Neuman said.

Bachmann has kept all their online list prices about 30% higher than the average street sale for many years. They don't want to even come close to undercutting the hobby shops that carry their products.

After seeing the Whitcomb & price I felt it was obvious we would see more than Post War-ish stuff out of Williams; with prices to match too.

Still cheaper than what I'd expect to see new from others though.

They will be reduced for York.   A few years ago,  I purchased many from Train World for very short money.  The Williams G. Is a great locomotive.   Great for DCS or ERR conversions.

yes they where getting rid of old style sound system in stock at cost so the new ones with the new sound system could be brought in. even with there discount there now like $400++
