You also might purchase the William Kratville book "Big Boy"; it will give you more information than you can understand.

The cooling coils cool the air from the air compressors.  On the first group of Big Boys they were originally mounted on the handrails on the pilot deck.  While they worked very well they were prone to breakage, so on the second group they went with Wilson aftercooler units, which are smaller and less fragile.
