My primary railroads are the Southern and Norfolk Southern. However, the Milwaukee Road 261 routinely makes excursion trips on my Southern railroad. In additional, you will frequently see GE Demonstrator with charging lights pass on by! Ken
Sometimes I just buy what I like regardless of road
I'm one who purchases what I like even though I like favor the mid-atlantic railroads. I'm hoping by summer to finally have a small layout to run some of my trains that I have amassed. After 9+ months of having a bum foot has slowed me down considerably, I can't wait to wear regular shoes again. One thing is for sure the rails are going to have to share with the many and I mean many different road names that I have.

In O Gauge, this road name is hard to come by......
HO, & N Scale, there is a lot more availability. This is a custom D&MR locomotive...

My primary roads are Boston & MAINE and Conrail but I liked the color and simplicity of this engine so I pulled the trigger on it. No regrets.
I started with Maine Central and Bangor And Aroostook railroads, always diesel freight.
Now my focus has turned to a lot of steam locos and passenger no particular roads. I purchased a premier SP cab forward, lionel 765 Berk and VLBB. I run other types but the previously mentioned get a lot of run time on the Flagg Stop mainline.
I'm not a purist regarding particular railroads but the western ones dominate what I have built up over the years, UP and SP in particular and I have practically no rolling stock from anything else. Because my Dad was a Santa Fe fan I actually started with the modern versions of what he had (F3s in particular). Aside from that, the Pennsy, Chicago South Shore and N&W ("only" a Jawn Henry) are represented - mainly out of nostalgia.
Our Layout is a visual family tree, thus we model the railroads where our family has lived both past and present. For geographical areas that are/ were saturated with multiple railroads, we tend to only model 1 or 2 RR, to avoid both too busy of a layout and excessive spending. Example, my Grandmother was born and raised in Hell's Kitchen and Asbury Park, thus there are a whole slew of options, but to use the KISS method, we only model the PRR & NYC. Same for my Mother who was born and raised in D.C. There are plenty of options, but at some point you have to say enough is enough. Thus primarily these are the Flags we choose to model, though at this point not all are represented on our roster: PRR, NYC, N&W, NKP, L&N, SOU, K&IT, Conrail, C&O/ B&O, CofG, MoPac, MKT, CB&Q, D&RGW, ATSF, UP, SP, and both the Polar RR & The Polar Express.
A long time ago I decided to have whatever my son and I liked to be on the layout!!
If we so choose or depending on the mood, we may run all UP, Santa Fe etc.
Most of the time we have different RR's. It's a lot of fun and many of those RR's have very colorful historys and paint scheme's
I have 17 different road names in my stable of engines for both East and West coast coverage. After a recent trip to Europe, and seeing some of the freight cars MTH is now selling in their natural environment, I might consider this expansion
My primary is Canadian National. I have yet to get a Canadian Pacific locomotive. But I do have a CSX and since there were no Canadian offerings in the most recent catalog I ordered a BN SD40. Lionel doesn't offer much when it comes to Canadian railways and when they do I usually don't have the money to buy a train.
