It gets it's signal from the 455MHz "track" signal rather than directly from the CAB unit. This makes it work with any TMCC, LEGACY or, CAB1L system.

Funny thing, my Legacy Base did work at one time with the old Powermaster units, without a Powerbridge, but now it doesn't. It seems as though when it was sent back to L for a charging board replacement and signal issues, I can no longer control those older Powermasters. I think I need a Powerbridge(?) or upgrade to the newer Powermasters which are now wireless(no ground signal connection necessary).
The Legacy base alone could never have worked with the 6-24130 or 6-12867 PowerMaster, they are totally incompatible. The Legacy PowerMaster Bridge is the accessory that was produced to allow the Legacy to operate the original PowerMaster units.

If Super'O' man is like me he may have had TMCC base hooked up with Cab-2 base and forgotten about it.

He had to be using a CAB 1 then. The Powermaster only get their commands directly from a Cab 1. You don't need a TMCC1 base to use an old powermaster. Just a CAB 1 and the powermaster will do.
A CAB1 or a Legacy PowerMaster Bridge is the only way that old PowerMaster ever worked.

I agree with you Marty, but if he was controlling TMCC or Legacy engines with Cab 1 he would have needed the Cab 1 base to communicate with them.
Well, it's farfetched, but he could have been running them in conventional mode with the CAB1 and a PowerMaster. 
I agree with you, I can't imagine that's what was going on, but it's possible.
I did use an original TMCC base using my Cab1. But it doesn't seem to work now, it seems as though the orig base blew out, which has happened before and had to replace. I am now getting the new Powermaster style, so I won't have to worry about the orig base.
How do you know it's the base and not the CAB1?
The Cab1 can control the TR when booting up, connected to a TPC unit, and control ENG, but that sounds like the orig base is still good. I cannot control or boot up a TR which is connected to an original Powermaster. I've switched out Powermasters and still get no response from them.
My mistake : I reprogrammed the Powermaster, and now it boots up the TR with the orig Cab1

Process of elimination. Nice when it's a simple solution. 
Our club recently experimented with a member's original PowerMaster. It helps folks with conventional engines enjoy them more. So much so, that the club just purchased two (2) Legacy PowerMasters. My question is, from this thread it sounds as though the original PM took its commands to vary voltage directly from the Cab1, but the Legacy PM does not -- requiring a Command base to be part of its configuration. Is that correct? If so, does it matter if that's a TMCC or Legacy base? In other words, is the way we've had the original PM wired into a loop of the club layout different than the way we should wire in the new Legacy PM's? Thanks.
PS I like how the Legacy PM will work with any CabX instead of having to be a Cab1 as in the case of an original PM. The club and members have Cab1 and Cab2 remotes.

It has been a long time since I have switched to all Legacy but when l had both TMCC & Legacy on my layout l needed l believe it was the Powermaster bridge that connects the two bases for the Cab 1 to communicate with the Legacy Powemasters.
