Ed helped/pushed me to build my Seaboard Whalebelly hopper:
He built one for the Seaboard Coast Line at the same time. His was published in OST and mine was published in the S-CL Modeler online magazine. Ed also had the decals made for us both.
We had emailed each other frequently about odd projects and I mentioned to him I had always wanted a model of Seaboards Motorcar 2028:
One day I get a package in the mail, Ed had started on a model of it and sent it to me to complete.
I still have it in the box, his passing has prompted me to finish this thing in his honor.

He has left a legacy for us.

Guys, I had no idea my Dad had influenced so many. Honestly I do not think he did either. He loved building things and most of all sharing how he did it with others. He taught me several things over the years. I was giving 4 stroke 5 event demonstrations of the internal combustion engine in grade school.. and thought it was normal for other kids to know this too. I ended up working on helicopters for a living and ultimately managing quality & safety management systems in the oil & gas industry.
My brother, Mom (Betty), and I truly appreciate your responses and phone calls. You have made us feel quite proud of our dad. We are still pondering what is to become of his lay out. I certainly do not want it to be disposed of. We have yet to go through many boxes of cars, etc. At some point we may reach out to everyone and see if there are any requests from you guys. Enough for now. still too difficult to process. I just wanted to respond to all of his friends and thank you.

I talked with Erik today. It is with a sad heart that I am passing this along. Betty is in hospic for a perferated stomach ulcer and near the end. Betty was a wonderful woman who supported Ed and made the family complete.

I wish I had lived near Ed. He could have taught me a lot more. I learned in just reading what he shared.

Sad news indeed. Having lost 5 family members (mom, brother, uncle, sister-in-law, mother-in-law) throughout 2005 (and my wife this year) I know how this feels.
Erik, if you're listening, hang in there and think of all the good times you had with your mom and dad.

Betty has indeed passed away. In the end her health failed and she just wanted to be together with Ed. Its been a tough 40 days or so seeing both parents suffer and pass but during the process I have learned so much about them and the people they associated with. You guys were an important part of their life and I thank you again for your friendship with them. In the end its our relationship with friends and family that really matter.
I am still contemplating how we are going to proceed with Dad's layout and associated materials. If you are interested in advising me please let me know and we'll see what we can do. Obit may be seen in the Johnson City Press http://www.johnsoncitypress.co...nd-betty-jean-taylor

Eric we're so sorry to hear of Betty's passing, but now she and Ed are back together for eternity. I hope you can find comfort in your heart that they are together again sharing the happiness they experienced in life. Our thoughts and prayers go with you, we'll miss your Mom an Dad.

Model railroading is the common denominator that unites us folks, but the passion and craftsmanship of a guy like Ed Reutling was the "glue" that kept our hobby alive. We owe it to Ed to continue sharing our passion for this hobby with others, the way he did with us; with humor, comradeship and good will towards men (and women)
