I have decided that I am definently going to install a Railsounds Commander in my conventional GP-38 that I got in a set. I would also like to install a cruise commander In it. Is it possible to put one in a conventional only locomotive? How will it work off a conventional transformer? Is it easy to install? I understand this will give me the ability to run TMCC too, correct?

I've never done a "sound only" RS upgrade, but numerous ERR Command Control with RS installations (there's a Dash-9 on the workbench right now).

Of course, command control is, by definition, not conventional. Basically, a command

control motherboard is a reversing unit - F-N-R - that can receive orders from your

command control system, rather than by the "sequential latching" due to current flow

interruption (transformer Direction button).

Anything can be put in anything, pretty much. Your GP-38, regardless of brand, is

probably one of the most upgraded.

So, go to ERR website and look at the products and instructions - or, even better, call

Bill at Modern Toy Train Parts (see website). He sells, and also installs if you'd like, all this stuff. He's helpful.

It's pretty easy to do - but it can look confusing at first. Baby steps.

The Cruise Commander runs fine in a conventional setting, though I'm at a loss as why you'd buy one for strictly conventional operation.

As for your GP-38, as long as it's a DC motored locomotive, you can use the Cruise Commander.  For AC motored locomotives, you can use the AC Commander.

The Electric RR website has installation manuals for their products, download the manuals and take a look.  That'll give you a good idea of the installation complexity.

I have heard the sample sounds on the ERR site. They sound great Here is my question - Does the the Rail Sounds Commander also include some form of crew talk and Tower Com?

Thanks,

Richard

Richard, they have essentially the same sounds as Railsounds 5 including tower com and intelligible crew talk.

If it's an early TMCC steamer it may have a Pullmor AC motor, in which case the Cruise Commander won't work, so be sure your engine has a DC can motor before proceeding.

John,

I am pretty much a TMCC user but I have several MTH PS 2 steam engines I run conventionally. I have no interest in getting DCS. But I love having cruise control in the PS 2 running conventional.

Sometimes I just enjoy running TMCC equipped engines in conventional with my PW ZW and the cruise commander gives me cruise control even in conventional.

Some folks have little or no interest in TMCC, Legacy, etc but enjoy some of the features that the cruise commander offers, i.e cruise control.

if the OP has no need for cruise then I agree he could save some $$$ and use an AC commander.
