Just had a read through some  of this thread.

I note the problems appear to have been with a Trainsounds tender. There is another issue with those boards as they malfunction on 50Hz power. Random whistle and bell triggers. One of the guys (Electrical Engineer) over in Holland had a good look at the Trainsounds board a few years ago and found that one of the tracks on the board picks up the AC mains frequency (probably used for timing).

Now the other board mentioned is from the polar express announcement car. That board  works fine on 50Hz as we have one running on our round the tree layout at the moment.

I don’t know if this information is of any use apart from showing that the Trainsounds board has other design flaws. It’s interesting the board was never “fixed” to my knowledge unlike the similar problem with the CW-80 transformer. It was replaced with Railsounds ready to run.

The normal fix in 50Hz areas is to replace Trainsounds with a conventional Railsounds board.

Here a link directly to my post in the Manual's thread about the design and modification of the ERR Sound Converter.

ERR Sound Converter design files and code source

I've since done more mods to improve some aspects of the ditch lights as that's what I was using these for.

The place that the AC is used is for the LM317 direct feed to generate the DC offsets for the whistle/bell function.  I don't see any way the uP uses the input AC for timing, it's not input to the uP in any fashion.  I don't believe the Sound Converter is doing anything that should be affected by the mains frequency.

Here's a direct link to the schematic for your reference: ERR Sound Converter Schematic.pdf

Hi John,  No I was not suggesting the sound converter was the problem.

But just to share the frequency issue we had with Trainsounds, in other words it already had a flaw in its design.

If the Trainsounds board uses the AC for the DC offsets that would explain the whistle and bell going nuts on 50Hz.

I only had a brief conversation with the lad from Holland and that was a good few years ago.
