I have a 990 Legacy control system but wish to add the 993 expansion set. The controllers appear to be the same, the remotes the same. My question is what steps are necessary to enable the expansion set (993) to function on the layout?
Must each locomotive be entered into the 993 as it was with the 990 or is there some other step necessary? I would assume that both controllers must be on the same channel.
Any guidance here would be appreciated.

The 993 Cab2, which is just another Cab2 remote will pull all the info from the base. It's that easy. Yes you will have to do a "search" of the 990 base but once you do that all the info in your base will be present on the new Cab2. The 993 "base" is just a charger.
I would recommend that they are all on the same version o\software.

You'll find that your second remote "magically" has all the locomotives that your first remote has, they're stored in the command base.

Actually I think this 993 is a good idea and I just might invest in one myself some time.

I have a couple of them, one goes to modular shows with me.
The #990 is legacy base plus cab2 for $289.95, or so.
The #993 is just a battery charger holder plus cab2 for $209.95, or so.
If you can afford the $80 difference you should get the extra #990 instead of a #993. You will be getting a spare legacy base, that can be very useful for emergencies. The cab2 that is not being used can be seated in your layout's legacy base to charge while you are operating your trains. Rotate the cab2s to keep batteries charged.
Sooner or later your legacy base will fail or you will have a problem that you "think" could be caused by the legacy base. The spare base can help you isolate the problem. It can keep you running if you have to send your base in for repair. I had to send my legacy base to Lionel for repairs two years ago. Now I have to do it again. The serial port won't download the legacy software update so I can run the new LCS hardware. I tried 3 different serial to usb cables before concluding the serial port is the problem. I have a #990 and a #993. If I had bought the extra #990 instead of a #993 I would have been able to figure things out sooner. Now I must send the legacy base to Lionel for repair again. It is not summertime and it is not OK to shut my layout down now. I refuse to run conventional. I decided to buy another #990. The new ones are supposed to be more robust and it will give me a spare base. Also another cab2 to make recordings on.

You're right Greenline. I have 2 990 complete sets and this keeps me from moving the base into the house at Christmas. Also it has a smaller roster of engines for the grandkids. That makes it less confusing for them.

Does the expansion #993 have to have the same Legacy Version Software as the original it becomes a companion to?

the handhelds are all the same and no handhelds do not need the same version number. but why not update it?
Actually, the CAB2's should run at the same version, and there's no reason not to use the latest version, 1.52 hasn't had any issues that I've seen or heard reported.
