Our grandsons RK FEF wasn't running so they brought it to me. It seemed like the battery might be dead at first because it would just sit there and play some sounds. Whenever I'd try to get her going, it would ring 2 clanks. I disconnected the power and it played the idle sounds for a good long period. I removed the boiler and a cap fell out? It was slightly swelled on top where the wires protrude out. There was a space on the smoke board clearly marked with a circle the size of the cap and a white line to indicate the "-". So I soldered the cap back on and the engine wouldn't run. I disconnected the smoke unit and it ran for whatever reason, luck?

I checked and I didn't have the 330uf 35v cap. So I soldered on a 220uf 35v cap to see if it would work.

The engine ran fine after that.

I'll post pictures later.

Joe maybe the 330 uf cap is a critical value , did you check the cap you took out maybe it has lost it's value or has leakage!

Alan

Yeap! That maybe it. It ran for me so I thought I had it licked. I bet a higher value would help. It was 330 and I went with what I had, a 220. I'll need to get a 330 in there.

I should have opened the tender. I know better. I got too much going on and slipped.

Joe, check the harness pins on the PCB at the back of the engine.  Hit them with a solder iron, you may have a cracked solder joint.

The next thing is a bad harness.   G

I was looking there and tried wiggling it. I should re-solder it anyways. I've had that fail before on my Challengers.

It seemed to be a coincidence that it ran with a new cap for me. Ah well. I should know better by now.

I bought the green batteries when Marty posted about the old white ones and thought this engine would last. These boys are tough on stuff. They've beat up everything I can throw at them!

That PS3 steamer you fixed is stashed away until they get older. I can't afford it!
