While inspecting the smoke unit on my MTH 2500 Transfer Diesel it touched the frame.  I heard a snap type noise and the engine went completely dead.  No lights,no sounds, nothing.  Reset did not help.  Have I done the unthinkable and cooked a board.  If this is the case how much am I looking at to fix this?  Also the engine has the old 5 volt board in it which I think is unavailable.  Thanks for any help.

Not good news, I suspect you shorted the PV or P5V to ground, that's really bad for the board.

It might be repairable, but you'll likely end up with the 3V replacement board.  It's close to a drop-in when you get it with the 5V connector shells.  You will also have to change the speaker, battery, and charging cable and jack.  MSRP on the parts is about $215-220 I believe.

FWIW, if you are a member of the MTH RR club, you can buy the upgrade kit for $150 ($180 otherwise), and all you have to do is swap the shells from the toasted 5V board to the 3V board, the rest of the components are there unless the kit speaker doesn't fit.

An MTH ASC should be able to test the board.  If the heating element power touched the frame it may be repairable.  If the fan motor power touched the frame the probability goes down.

If your comfortable removing the board I can test it.  If you want it test/repaired you can send the whole engine.  If you need my assistance, e-mail is in my profile.  G
