Made an interesting discovery whilst doing test operations of my giraffe unit train, to wit:  If the telltale is moved from the center of the actuator bar to the end, the giraffes duck their heads without hitting, even at relatively high speeds!

The motive power, incidentally, is "Little Stinky", the world's only Lionel trolley steam locomotive (as far as I know)...

I like your steam trolley. The Pacific Electric used to put trolley poles on their non electric engines because all of the signals were thrown by being tripped by the electric wire. In other words the engines were not powered by the wire but the wire tripped the signal so all units had the poles whether they needed it or not.

 

Your 44 tonners with pantagraphs look like the Niagrara Electric engines.

The basic idea is that the pole is used overnight to run an electric heater in the boiler to keep steam up, making it easy to get things running in the mornings...  :-)
