Glue for outdoor application - recommendations needed

Use Matte Medium.  It is pretty much permanent.

Matte medium won't work, it is water soluble. Once some gravel or grit gets in the gears of you locos you will be unhappy. You might try putting some wood or , better yet, Azak down as a base for your track.

if it were me I would get some LGB trains and track for this, they are made for that type of application.

tite bond woodworker II, I have used many times outdoors. you can thin it down with water, but once it sets up it wont re-dissolve with water.

I'd worry more about UV damage to the ties. I wanted to go "G" scale before I settled on "O", but it seemed like track was going to cost too much just for a large oval (20x40ish) and I was concerned about upkeep, particularly weeds, when we're traveling, not to mention the hat of summer here.

Check with a local boat supply or builder.

Wild Mary (Nick's) suggestion is right on the money. In case your hunt runs sour, give Exterior Grade Gorilla Glue a try. It's moisture activated. 

guys, he needs a glue he can thin down to ballast with, not a glue to glue something together. gorilla glue will foam up and look like spray insulation.

I wouid agree with the suggestion to try Titebond II. It's a waterproof version of woodworker's yellow glue intended for outdoor use, and it can be thinned with water. I've never used it to glue down ballast, but I've found it to be an excellent adhesive for general woodworking and it does thin down nicely with water. 

I used Matte Medium in two gondolas filled with ballast.  Later when I decided I wanted to take it out, I soaked it in hot water.  Wouldn't budge, so I soaked it for several days in a pale of water.  Still couldn't get it out. It is still in the two gondolas.

Thanks for the replies guys! Sorry it took so long for me to get back with you, but I had more pressing matters to attend to (such as the venison cooking on the engine block. Luckily I was the fifth person to hit the deer, so only the bumper, a/c, and radiator was damaged.)
